Cat. Value (Adjusted Cat. value adjusted for condition:
An early example of a Penny Red star - position E-F - with a clean, full and clear black Maltese cross cancellation. Whilst the stamp itself is far from beautiful owing to the torn upper left corner, it is nonetheless a shining example of this ancient and attractive postmark. With three clear margins, a clean face and minimally damaged gum (ignoring the handwritten pencil marks), it would be hard to deny its catalogue value. Given its condition however it would likely retail at a large discount, but surely wouldn't avert the gaze of someone seeking a Maltese cross.
