Nice example of a Penny Red from plate 196, position BK. Two good margins at the left and bottom, and one very thin margin on the top. The face shows great detail and is mostly unobscured by the postmark. The gum is naturally missing but the reverse is nice and clean with the only fault being a previous hinge. The postmark is a oval barred numeral cancel from England and Wales, with the office number starting with 49. The left hand partial stamp suggests it was part of a duplex. The postmark itself is very clean even if it is incomplete. The only major fault appears in the lower right corner, where there is a perforation missing. Other perforations are fairly decent for its age. Overall a nice example.
Oval Barred Numeral Cancel: 49?; Partial duplex
Large Crown (Standard)
